T-minus 10 hours….We start hiking in the morning. I’m nervous. Probably more nervous than I should be. This is, after all, just hiking. Not exactly rocket surgery.
Tonight’s accommodations in San Diego are courtesy of Scout and Frodo. Their species are also known as “Trail Angels”. These lovely individuals graciously open their home to PCT hikers. They provide accommodation, a hot meal and morning transportation to the trail head at the Mexican border.
It’s a cosmopolitan crew here tonight of about 20 hikers. Nations represented include Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Austria, Canada and of course, the United States. Three large tents occupy the backyard which backs onto a ravine, while the sound of fighter jets and helicopters from the nearby Miramar Naval Air Station pierce the otherwise quiet evening air. Fans of the 80’s movie Top Gun will recognize Miramar as the place where Tom “Maverick” Cruise ran amok and had sex with all of his instructors…..including the dudes.
Anyhow, I’ll keep tonight’s journal entry short. Hopefully I can get some sleep, what with the pre-hike nerves and such. The real fun starts in the morning at “oh-5-hundred”.
Hugs and Kisses,
Steve
